He loves her because of who she still is despite all the things she's done.
Not everyone could have survived what she did and Matt loves that about
her. He'll reassure her that it's not as often as she needs him to. He's a
patient man. She's going to have to get used to the good things. That's not
to say that nothing bad will ever happen again. Plenty bad has happened to
Matt since he chose to become Daredevil, but plenty good has a well. That's
sort of the way life is, he's learned: it's a mixture of good and bad.
She's had a long stretch of bad and she's due some good.
At least it's sinking in. She can take as much time as necessary realizing
it as long as she does realize it. Matt has had plenty of one night stands
in his life, but they're not what he wants anymore, which is why he hasn't
had one in a while. His professional life and life in general is far too
complicated to bring someone that he doesn't know well and may not want to
stick around into that complicated life. Besides all of that, Katniss isn't
someone he wants to have a one night stand with. That's one reason he's
been so hesitant to start anything with her; he knows it's a long term
situation and not a one night stand. Yes, things will get more complicated
between them, but they'll also get more rewarding.
He knows when those tears start to fall, but he also knows that the reason
she's crying isn't particularly bad. He's getting a lot of mixed emotions
off her right now, but that's probably pretty normal considering. When they
do have sex, it won't be like that. It'll be something entirely different,
something that she wants and that makes her feel loved. It be about mutual
pleasure. It will also probably end in cuddling.
When she leans in to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth, he lets her
wrists go. This isn't a trick or a spiel. He is sincere and passionate
about what he's saying and he does want her both physically and
emotionally, which is why this is so awkward and complicated. He thinks
it's worth it though and even if he wanted to, it would be too hard to
separate his emotions for her from the physical aspect of things. Matt
would only end up getting his heart broken if they didn't have this talk.
She's not going to mess it up, and kissing him certainly doesn't mess
anything up. His heart clenches when she says she loves him. There's so
many reasons why she shouldn't, but she does and he loves her so there's
little point in fighting against that. He slides one hand up her back to
rest at the nape of her neck. "I love you too," he whispers because he
does, regardless of how much he's tried to fight it and tonight, the things
he's learned, has only made him love her more.
