preemptiveforgiveness: (Harder than it seems)

True enough. Maybe one day she'll want to fill in the gaps. She knows more of his story than he does hers, but he's okay with that. She's thanked him more than enough times. He doesn't want her to thank him. He wants her to take the second chance he gave her and make something of it. He wants her to have a better life, to be happy.

She doesn't have to thank him anymore. Really. She doesn't have to maintain a proper distance either. She's really not like a daughter to him, but he's trying to tell himself that she should be. Convince him, Katniss.

He won't involve her in the blackmail if he doesn't have to. He can't imagine that seeing any of those people again would be busy and that's only knowing half of what these people did to her. He wouldn't blame her for wanting to kill them, but it would ruin her life and he doesn't want that for her. He didn't save her so that she could end up in prison.

No, she shouldn't leave. It would crush Matt if she left. She's not a criminal. She's a girl who had no choices. He wants her in his life, in his apartment, no matter how complicated she makes his life.

She may be unaware, but he's completely aware of every movement, of the weight of her hand, the warmth of it. He's aware of the extra warmth produced by the slight friction of her thumb against his shirt. He takes a sharp breath, holding it a moment before releasing it. All of those super senses he's got, they include a sensitivity to touch. His sheets aren't silk because he's a spoiled rich boy. They're silk because everything else feels like sandpaper. Right now, all he can think about it how her hand would feel against his bare skin and he's really got to put those thoughts out of his head. He closes his eyes, focusing on blocking out the way she feels. He hopes that she simply thinks he's thinking over her proposal.

"Katniss," he says, his voice a little rougher, a little less controlled than usual. "I don't doubt that you could make a difference, that you will make a difference, but do you know what it would do to me if you got hurt?" Or worse. He can't even say worse.
