Matt doesn't push, simply asks enough questions to let her know that if
she'd like to talk about it, he's here to listen. He does like hearing
stories about her younger life though. He likes to imagine her happy at one
point. As for the nightmares, when he hears her wake up, he'll always go
check on her, but like their conversations, he doesn't push her to talk
about the nightmares. He knows that sometimes talking doesn't help.
Sometimes, the only thing you can do is try to learn to live with those
nightmares.
Her education can be taken care of (he'll be glad to help her when she's
ready) and the crimes she committed were in a different life under
different circumstances. Besides, if it ever comes down to it, she knows a
good lawyer (or two). He also knows the names, voices, and smells of the
people that were there betting on those fights. Some of them are very
important people in the city of New York and it wouldn't do for it to get
out that they were betting on such a thing. Matt feels certain it won't
ever be an issue. Everything that she was isn't as important as who she is
now and who she can be, who she works to be. He honestly believes that and
he knows there's hope for Katniss' future. She really doesn't get to decide
what kind of girl he's with; that's his decision and he does like
her.
What she did isn't going to ever change his opinion of her. It's
what she chooses to do now that she can choose that he's concerned with.
It's not as if Matt hasn't done things in his life that he regrets.
Besides, his circumstances were much better than hers have been. She's
always got a place to stay and he won't stop helping her try to succeed
here.
He did notice the second she raised her hand and he didn't shy away from
the touch. He can almost hear the smile in her voice and the affection as
well. It makes his heart beat a little harder, makes him a little
breathless. It has been a long time since anyone has cared about him
romantically. He swallows thickly, catching his breath. "No, but the
Avengers aren't doing anything to clean up Hell's Kitchen. In fact, if I
remember right, last time they just destroyed it. This city needs me."
